hazy divinity

God.

God is the most abstract term I can think of. No wonder wars are waged in its defence: the power of religion is a promise made in the name of something that people can put their unwavering trust in- because it cannot be disproven. It creates armies of the ultimate loyal soldiers. For no other cause do people follow seemingly arbitrary customs; gather in masses only to bow before rock sculptures; read volumes of scripture; walk thousands of miles; donate hair, flowers, food, milk, money, their entire lives…

I’m not sure what I think. I am not a religious person, but I am wavered by the blockade question of where anything and everything ever came from… there must have been something to spark everything. But that doesn’t mean that God is a benevolent force, because there is far too much ache on this planet for that to be so. It doesn’t even mean that there’s a force paying attention to us.

I am young, and I don’t have an opinion yet. But for now, I’ll stick firmly to the fact that either way having an opinion is unnecessary because I’ll have to roll through my life and make decisions for the best based on things I know are real. I can’t make my life revolve around a theory as nebulous as that.

later note: a friend showed me a perfectly apt term, ‘agnostic’. By definition an agnostic person ‘believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God.’

  1. Totally agree… Hawking suggested in his doctoral thesis that the origin of everything is one small concentrated ball made of energy, matter and anti-matter which we now know has been expanding for about 13.7 billion years. Our existence is based on a series of random cosmic occurrences which happened over a time period and three dimensional space so large they are barely conceivable for us mere humans. So now that we know how we happened (in the vaguest terms possible), we have yet to understand why…

On a different topic, I believe that God and his actions were stories made up by smart men and women thousands of years ago to explain what they did not have the means to understand, and more importantly, to drive the general population toward actions which they believed would benefit society as a whole.

    1. I can agree with that… their stories must have worked so well because the presence of the divine is something that humankind has been grappling with for so long, they believe the unbelievable.

  2. When u posting another one? Can u write about what happens when we die? Or what u expect our level of human development to be like in 10000 years? Or if energy is never created nor destroyed, where did it originally come from? Also, what will be the most significant scientific breakthrough of my/your lifetime? Finally, how come we have crises of obesity AND starvation and what can we do about it?
